Parent Child Interaction Therapy

Build a Stronger Relationship. Support Better Behavior.

Is your child struggling with frequent tantrums, defiance, aggression, emotional regulation, or following directions?

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment designed for young children ages 2–7 and their caregivers. PCIT helps strengthen the parent-child relationship while teaching practical skills to improve communication, manage challenging behaviors, and support emotional regulation.

PCIT May Help With:

  • Tantrums and frequent meltdowns

  • Defiance and noncompliance

  • Aggressive behaviors

  • Difficulty following directions

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

  • Parent-child conflict

  • Challenging behaviors at home or school

  • Trauma-related concerns

  • Difficulty with transitions and routines

Diagnoses & Concerns PCIT May Support

PCIT may be helpful for children experiencing behavioral, emotional, or relationship difficulties associated with:

  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

  • Disruptive behavior disorders

  • Adjustment-related difficulties

  • Trauma-related concerns

  • Anxiety-related behaviors

  • Emotional and behavioral regulation difficulties

  • Parent-child relationship difficulties

PCIT may also be appropriate for children experiencing significant behavioral challenges even without a formal diagnosis.

How PCIT Works

PCIT is a parent-coaching approach that focuses on two important areas:

Child-Directed Interaction (CDI)

CDI focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship through positive interactions and play. Parents learn skills to increase connection, encourage positive behaviors, and improve communication with their child.

Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI)

PDI focuses on helping parents establish clear expectations, give effective directions, set appropriate limits, and respond consistently to challenging behaviors.

Throughout treatment, parents receive real-time coaching and support while practicing these skills with their child.

Is PCIT Right for Your Family?

If you have a child between ages 2–7 who is struggling with behavior, emotional regulation, trauma-related concerns, or following directions, PCIT may be a good fit for your family.

PCIT provides parents with practical tools they can use at home while helping children develop healthier behaviors and strengthening the parent-child relationship.
